Books Should Be Affordable

I love to read, always have. I always have. Like most readers I have went through times where I read less, and times where reading was pretty much all I did. I found an old homeschool project when I had to record everything I’d done in school that year and I had listed all the books I’d read. THIRTY! I saw that and immediately felt like young me would be ashamed of adult me.

I have been trying to read more this year, and so far I’m doing well. A few Octobers ago I culled my library do to some personal things going down at the time. It was a very painful afternoon where I permanently parted with over four hundred books. This made considerable room for new books! Who doesn’t love new books?

New books are expensive. I swear, make a round at Walmart and the price of the book you are considering will have gone up by the time you get back around. That is to say nothing of proper books stores like Barnes and Noble. Even Half-priced books are a little loose on their definition of Half-priced these days. Times are tough and prices go up. I get it.

I want books to be affordable. Not so long ago we had Mass Market paperbacks that were made to be cheap. They’ve since died because while the quality remained the same the cost of them went up to the point that buying the much nicer trade paperback became the better choice.

I have made the decision that the books offered by my company should be affordable. They are priced at the point where we can keep the lights on and continue to publish, but are not gouging my fellow readers. I do not aspire to be Harper Collins or Walmart. I aspire to be like the CEO of Arizona Sweet Tea.

“We’re successful, we’re debt free, we own everything,” he says. “Why have people who are having a hard time paying their rent pay more for their drink?”

When asked later on in the same article if they’d ever raise the prices he said,

“I don’t know about never, [but] not in the foreseeable future,” he told Today. “We’re going to fight as hard as we can for consumers, because consumers are my friend.”

I like to think readers are my friends. I want books to be affordable, because lord knows something should be. Check out our store and hopefully you’ll see something you like!
